Geminiani The Enchanted Forest
Vivaldi Cantata La Gloria e Imeneo RV 687
A disciple of Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Geminiani worked mostly in London where he made a fortune. This art collector created music which was as highly coloured as Neapolitan canvases. Always full of virtuosity, but occasionally dissonant, The Enchanted Forest was his final score. It was written to accompany a pantomime show at the Tuileries Palace in Paris. Vivaldi’s cantata for two voices, La Gloria e Imeneo, is equally remarkable. Some arias are “hits” in the modern sense of the word. The score was composed in honour of the marriage of Louis XV and Polish princess Maria Lesczynska. The French ambassador to Venice was treated to the premiere on the evening of 12 September 1725. With best wishes for a happy marriage from the composer!
