Beethoven Concerto for piano No. 1
Symphony No. 3 « Eroica »
It is unusual for a performer to play two concertos in one concert, especially when the works appear superficially to have little in common. However, this is the challenge taken up by American pianist Jonathan Biss, who is just as enthusiastic about early music as he is about contemporary works. The British composer was captivated by his playing and dedicated her third concerto City Stanzas New Work to him and we are now hearing it performed in France. The score is both a tribute to Beethoven’s Concerto No. 1 and a depiction of an urban landscape. Full of rhythm and contrasts, it draws inspiration from the energy of the Viennese composer. It seems entirely natural that this dazzling evening should be rounded off with the “Eroica” Symphony.
