Tales and legends
Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night's Dream, overture
Florentz Qsar Ghilâne « Le palais des Djinns » op. 18
Saint-Saëns Danse macabre op. 40
Ravel Mother Goose, suite
Dukas L’Apprenti sorcier, symphonic scherzo
A Sunday concert which has all the characteristics of a ball and a children’s round for the young and not so young. Mendelssohn sets the tone with his procession of fairies, elves, amazons and other servants of love who feature in the opening of his Midsummer Night’s Dream. Suddenly midnight strikes and the Devil invokes Death in a Danse macabre which continues until dawn. Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite tenderly conjures up Beauty and the Beast and Hop O’ My Thumb, who are then joined by the intrepid Sorcerer’s Apprentice. You will emerge from this whirlwind of a concert exhausted but happy!
