Louis XIV imagined a comedy and ballet made up of his favourite elements of these two genres. He did not live long enough to actually bring his ideal opera to fruition! However, the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles has finally achieved this. The project may be a little pretentious, but Louis’ tastes are well documented and the idea of recreating a royal work featuring melodies by composers whose music his Majesty enjoyed had a certain appeal. The conventional trio of lover/young lead/villainous woman, choruses, major arias and duets and dances bring back to life unpublished works which nevertheless formed part of the great architect-King’s bedside reading. It should not be forgotten that opera stages were also an area in which the engineers and mathematicians of the seventeenth century carried out experiments. In 2017, therefore, it seems appropriate to use 3D video to create fantastical visions which have thrilled young and old alike since the dawn of opera.
