Esa-Pekka Salonen direction
One of Théâtre audiences’ favourite orchestras gets everyone’s vote with Beethoven and Mahler’s First.
Esa-Pekka Salonen - DR
Beethoven Symphony No. 2
Mahler Symphonie No. 1 « Titan »
In the spring of 2011, Lorin Maazel conducted the Philharmonia here in Mahler’s Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Symphonies. The orchestra has performed every season since then and is hopping across the Channel with its musical director, the dapper Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose recent concerts have provided some of the high points at the Théâtre. Cast your mind back to his Turangalîla by Messiaen, his centenary Rite or the concert version of Wozzeck, which were all majestic. This is the first time he has taken us into Mahler’s world and the experience of the epic First Symphony should be thrilling.
