Haydn Trio for piano, violin and cello No. 47 Hob. XV:27
Schubert Sonata for cello and piano D. 821 « Arpeggione »
Mendelssohn Trio for piano, violin and cello No. 2 op. 66
Three consummate musicians perform a captivating programme. The eloquent piano of Martin Helmchen, winner of the Clara Haskil competition, blends harmoniously with the bright bowing of Antje Weithaas, who is a former winner of the renowned Kreisler and Bach competitions, and the warm tone of cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, who made her name with a stunning victory in the Rostropovich competition. The charm of the Arpeggione Sonata – named after the defunct instrument which was a cross between a guitar and cello – always lifts the spirits like a tonic and Haydn’s Trio No. 43 is the jewel in the crown of this brilliant ensemble, brimming with inventiveness and fantasy. Mendelssohn particularly admired this work. His own second Trio is no less accomplished than the work of his illustrious predecessor in terms of energy and ever-sparkling wit.
