Andrea Chénier

Umberto Giordano

Jonas Kaufmann brings the spirit of revolutionary melodrama to a stylish triumph

Sung in Italian with French subtitles

With his opera Andrea Chénier, Giordano has turned revolutionary poet and emblem of the French Revolution into one of the legendary roles of the Italian opera repertoire. The opera was a success right from its opening night and soon triumphed throughout Italy and around the world... Except in France, where it was considered too "counter-revolutionary"! Based on a very coherent libretto, Giordano composed an irresistibly lyrical score with all the ingredients of success: a rich sound palette, very heroic parts, passionate feelings and humanistic ideals... but which required a trio of top-quality performers to sing Chénier, Madeleine and Gérard. On 26 March, an impressive trio will gather and do more than justice to this work, which is still all too seldom performed in France.
