The Caisse des Dépôts, a public group serving France's economic and social development, deploys a sponsorship policy that helps budding talent emerge in two broad fields: classical music and dance, and architecture and landscape design. This initiative carries over what we are doing in the economy to the artistic domain.
The first pillar of our sponsorship policy reflects our role as owner of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, a leading centre for classical music and dance in France and worldwide. The second pillar is in line with our role as a developer of public space.
For nearly 30 years, we have been implementing a policy of musical sponsorship aimed at boosting the influence and popularity of classical music in France. This has led us to support an enormous number of organisations, festivals and awareness-raising initiatives for a broad audience.
The Caisse des Dépôts is aware of the importance of aiding the emerging talents who contribute to the wealth and vitality of the artistic scene, and now focuses its support on young professional musicians. It assists projects designed to help discover artists, ease their transition to professional status and promote their career:
- Early-career support projects led by training and counselling establishments or organisations involved in producing and distributing concerts and musical entertainment with young professional musicians or singers;
-Young musical groups, whether instrumental or vocal, that are finding their feet.
The Caisse des Dépôts has close ties with the theatre because of its dual commitment as owner and lead patron: it finances the theatre's running expenses and artistic programming, as well as the upkeep, enhancement and upgrading of its property.
The theatre is a flagship of twentieth century French architecture and pioneered construction in reinforced concrete. It was one of the first contemporary buildings to be listed as a historical monument.
Today, as at its inception, it hosts the most prestigious international performers and is one of the leading musical stages.
Once they finish their musical studies, young graduates are confronted with the difficulties of finding work. Whether they are destined for a career as a soloist or as an ensemble player, they will be able to complete further training, develop their skills and acquire their first stage experience through a number of structures and programmes.
As part of our sponsorship, we support various types of structure, such as:
- Singing, instrumental or chamber music competitions;
- Training orchestras, lyric workshops, academies and specialised centres;
- Concert or musical shows dedicated to young musicians.
"Specialised" or "independent" ensembles, formed by musicians keen to undertake their own specific artistic project, make a real effort to structure their work, get known by professionals and give concerts.
The support provided through our sponsorship is intended to contribute to the emergence or development of established ensembles with an initial experience in successfully producing and distributing concerts and shows. It is a contribution to the operation and activity of young ensembles, or a project grant for large-scale national or international productions.
France has played a leading role in structuring and codifying classical dance. The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées has enabled the creation of major choreographic shows. This is why we have chosen to help young choreographic creation designed for a young and very diverse audience. In a first phase, we opted to work through structures such as the national choreography centres, choreographic development centres and national stages, and support creative residencies.
As a leading stakeholder in public space development, a funder of social housing and France's leading social landlord, the Caisse des Dépôts believes in supporting young talent in architecture and landscape design. We support research, we assist with public awareness-raising initiatives in architecture and landscape design and we help finance innovative architecture and landscape design initiatives based on circular economy principles.
