You might as well warn the Avenue Montaigne, Hervé Niquet's little party is likely to cause a bit of a stir. With all the trumpets and timpani out for Charpentier and a final bouquet that he promises to be royal, Le Concert Spirituel will also give its rich colours to the Water Music conceived by Handel for an incredible river party. Imagine the picture: on 17 July 1717, a boatload of fifty or so instrumentalists, including an impressive contingent of blowers, went wild on the Thames, to the delight of George I's guests. The mood changes as we begin Corelli's Concerto grosso in G minor, the eighth in a series of twelve published posthumously by the Frenchman Etienne Roger in Amsterdam. Christmas is around the corner...
