Throughout his long career as a composer, from the first pages for piano and voice to The Four Last Songs with orchestra, from Salome to the ultimate Capriccio, Richard Strauss was a passionate and inspired champion of the female voice. As the husband of the singer Pauline de Ahna, he also always wondered about the links between music and poetry, as shown by the plot of Capriccio, which is based on the famous question: "Prima la musica? e poi le parole?" In addition to the two pages by Strauss, this concert will feature one of the overtures composed by Beethoven for his opera Leonore, which later became Fidelio, and this other famous overture inspired by Goethe's drama about which Beethoven wrote: "I caught fire as soon as I read it."
