Symphony No. 2 op. 27

To read

Until now, the Vienna Philharmonic has offered us few opportunities to hear them play the Russian repertoire, apart from their previous appearances with the Mariinsky Master. An "all-Rachmaninov" performance this evening, starting with a hit of the piano repertoire, the Concerto No. 2, a piece with an ideal alchemy and grandiose architecture that provokes a rise in power and emotions that never falters. A performance from which one does not emerge unscathed, all the more so since it will be performed by the colossus Denis Matsuev, who has long made it one of the cornerstones of his concerto repertoire. After the traumatic failure of his first symphony, Rachmaninov regained a taste for premiering in Dresden and wrote a second in a typically Mitteleuropa spirit, a symbol of a balance finally regained for the musician. This work is carried by a new breath, a remarkable richness of orchestration that is often irresistible and an architecture that is the most ambitious of the three symphonies he finally composed.
