A “musical conversation” or a “comic lyric opera”? Everything about Arabella reflects the art of ambiguity: from tender feelings to bold sensuality, right through to the unmistakable flavour of Vienna. Arabella, is unalloyed Hofmannsthal, with its fragile, fluid, discreetly immoral and brazen poetry and its forays into unfalteringly elegant private lives. A reflection of the Vienna of Emperor Franz-Josef in which another Strauss – Johann to whom a tribute is paid – reigned supreme, Arabella also bears the scars of a dark period which was just experiencing the rise of Hitler. The theme of metamorphosis, so dear to Hofmannsthal, underscores a libretto imbued with nostalgia. As a vehicle for this nostalgia, Richard Strauss invents endlessly fresh but disconcertingly lyrical music. A fine cast has been assembled here to burnish this jewel of pure intelligence and refinement. Unequivocally one of the major highlights of the season.
