The triumph of married love over tyranny is the main theme of Beethoven’s only opera. The genesis of the definitive opera was slow and the first version bore the name Leonora, in honour of its heroine who embodied the spirit of freedom and fidelity. Fidelio belongs to the German singspiel genre in which spoken dialogue (rather than recitative) alternates with singing. The musician’s skill in writing for orchestra is showcased to the full in the majestic overture. This hymn to freedom is also a daunting vocal score whose power and feminist and political themes have carved out a special place in opera history. The weighty title role is played by the hugely talented Nina Stemme.
