Within the space of just a few months in the mid-1720s, Handel took the English stage by storm with the series of works Giulio Cesare, Tamerlano and Rodelinda. In these three works exploring the conflict between love and power, Handel proved in each instance that he was a master of human passions. Emmanuelle Haïm, who has remained loyal to the British composer since the very start of her conducting career, took an early interest in the composer’s Italian roots. She has explored in succession his youthful cantatas, Roman oratorios and a selection of his major lyrical masterpieces, notably Orlando, Agrippina, Theodora, Giulio Cesare, and Alcina. This season she is devoting herself to the fate of Rodelinda, an opera she visited a few seasons ago at Glyndebourne, which is rarely performed on the French stage.
