To read

The Philharmonia and its musical director Esa-Pekka Salonen return with another brilliant demonstration in programme creation. These are indeed three "hits" of the symphonic repertoire but in total resonance. As a preamble, the opening of Weber's Freischütz, the founding piece of German Romanticism, which recalls Beethoven's Fidelio and already heralds Wagner's Tannhäuser. Then back to the roots with two of Beethoven's emblematic pieces, the Third Piano Concerto, a fundamental milestone in the concert repertoire, where the breath becomes wider, as does the vision. There is indeed a before and after this concerto. Then the Beethovenian universe of the symphony and the mythical Fifth, where the gesture there too takes on greater breadth and freedom.
