Louis Langrée and French repertoire go back a long way, as does his close rapport and relationship with the musicians of the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, which has grown deeper with every joint venture. Now an infrequent performer in France, he is making a comeback for this evening of Ravel which promises to be full of beautiful and tender musical moments. Ravel became fascinated by the East at such an early age that he decided to compose an opera based on The Arabian Nights while still a student at the Conservatoire, although only the Overture ever materialised. A few years later, he returned to this exotic subject matter, composing three poems for female voices. As ever with Ravel, the orchestral writing is opulent. The exotic theme inspired heady accents and perfumes, lavished with a sensuality which finds its full expression in La Valse.
