Berg Lulu-Suite, for soprano and orchestra
Mahler Symphony No. 9

Each season, we are delighted to play host to this British orchestra and its musical director, Esa-Pekka Salonen, who has been responsible for some of the Théâtre’s great concerts. His Turangalîla by Messiaen, centenary Rite of Spring, concert version of Wozzeck, and Mahler’s First Symphony were all stunning. For this latest visit, he is tackling the monumental last Ninth Symphony by the Viennese composer, which has not often been performed on avenue Montaigne. This was Mahler’s last will and testament and its tragic tone sums up his life and scales the heights of musical expressiveness. The conductor treads a tightrope between harmonic details in a score characterised by weightlessness and a huge musical arc. But with Salonen on the rostrum, we are in safe hands.
