Rinaldo Alessandrini harpsichord and direction
A perfect match: Rinaldo Alessandrini meets Bach
Variations on Variations
Bach Passacaglia in D minor, from Organ Passacaglia BWV 582
Goldberg Variations BWV 988, transcription for small strings ensemble by Rinaldo Alessandrini
This fine connoisseur of Monteverdi and Italian Baroque music more generally once again showcases his special affinity with Bach, his signature composer, with this adaptation of the renowned variations. He casts a fresh light on this towering work in a way which is neither over-elaborate nor expressionist, but simply accomplished, thoughtful, and wholehearted. Strings and bows enhance the original harpsichord score, engaging in dialogue with it and occasionally taking its place. These Variations on variations, make no claims to orthodoxy, but are rather an “entertainment, a subtle intellectual pleasure” for anyone who loves the Goldberg variations.
