Programme

Bach Italian Concerto BWV 971
Rimsky-Korsakov Shéhérazade
Ginastera Three Argentinian Dances
Gershwin Rhapsody in blue

The four young instrumentalists of the Signum Saxophone Quartet are convinced that Bach would definitely have written for the saxophone if it had existed in his day. Bach’s music for keyboard also lends itself to this exercise, as do arrangements of his chorales and fugues. These four saxophonists, who have enjoyed a meteoric career, will perform their own versions of Bach’s Italian Concerto. Toe-tapping is also guaranteed with the next section of the programme: a sensual Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, Ginastera’s Argentinian dances, and Gershwin’s Broadway. Our four musketeers will be accompanied by the young pianist Lukas Geniušas, who has recently recorded and performed a concert of great Russian classics (notably Prokofiev) and also less well-known works (Desyatnikov, Arzumanov, Ryuabov), which is indicative both of his curiosity and of his relish for this morning’s unusual venture.
