This morning, Nelson Goerner proves that he is a virtuoso without a hint of swagger with Clementi, Schumann and Beethoven’s Appassionata.
Clementi Sonata in F sharp minor
Schumann Papillons op. 2, Toccata in C major
Beethoven Sonata No. 23 op. 57 « Appassionata »a
What a charming man” chorus all those who share the stage with him as soon as his name is mentioned! It is a delight to see and hear this calm, scrupulous pianist who seems to be quite at odds with our frenzied world. His virtuosity is not writ large, a different sort of miracle is at work here; it lies in the spellbinding connection he establishes with the listener, unleashing an unprecedented level of emotional authenticity. This year, the pianist sets Clementi at his most dazzling in counterpoint to the young Schumann of the early works, before rounding off with a Beethoven Appassionata which is sure to be unique!
