To read

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the author of Ode to Joy, Vilde Frang and Lawrence Power adorn their pince-nez glasses. Found in a sketchbook at the end of the 19th century, the Duo with two obbligato eye glasses probably owes its title to the fact that the composer intended it for lorgnette wearers still poorly identified by Beethovenian musicology. While waiting to see more clearly, Nicolas Altstaedt joins his friends to remind us of the value of the String Trio No. 1, a divertimento sketched out by a young twenty-two-year-old musician ready to begin his schooling with Joseph Haydn, and of Opus 9 No. 3, already intense in expression and personal in writing. Young Ludwig is ready for the quartet. He went on to do it the following year.
