Jean-Guihen Queyras’s cello: from the Romanticism of Saint-Saëns to the modernity of Boulez

Dates

Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 2
Boulez Messagesquisse, for solo cello and six cellos on the name of Paul Sacher
Schubert Symphony No. 9 D. 944

After winning over critics and audiences alike with his rendition of Bach’s Suites for Cello, Jean-Guihen Queyras retraces his dazzling and eclectic career in this concert beginning with a classic of the Romantic repertoire, Saint-Saëns’s concerto. “Playing it is like travelling back to my childhood, as I learnt it when I was about twelve years old,” he jokes. Another crucial step, to which the former soloist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain returns here, is Pierre Boulez’s Messagesquisse. « To say that meeting him, aged twenty-three, was a formative experience in my life as a musician is an understatement. His writing is incredibly demanding. I worked every day for months to learn this masterpiece for a recording which I made under his supervision.»
