St-Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra

For nearly thirty years now, each year, Yuri Temirkanov and his musicians from St_Petersburg have been taking us on a musical journey to their homeland, sometimes with forays into Brahms or Dvořák. This time, they return to the basics with Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. To begin, a hit from the piano repertoire, Rachmaninov's Concerto No. 2, a piece with an ideal alchemy and grandiose architecture that provokes a surge of emotion that never falters at any time. A performance from which one does not come out unscathed, all the more so because here it will be performed by the great Denis Matsuev, who has long made it one of the cornerstones of his concert repertoire. In the second part, Tchaikovsky's Fourth, one of the most interesting by the appearance of this idea of destiny, a theme that will be fully illustrated in the musician's last two pieces. But Tchaikovsky's symphonic work cannot be summed up in a certain form of "pessimistic sentimentalism", it is, on account of its lyricism, one of the most beautiful examples of the Russian Romantic symphony.
