Don Giovanni proudly calls itself a dramma giocoso. The expression is difficult to translate given the apparent stark contradiction. But if we delve deeper, we are plunged into a delightful maelstrom of ambiguities. Nothing is what it seems: libertinage is celebrated but couples meet then are separated. Fate plays tricks with masks, right up until the final challenge. To celebrate the centenary of the Viennese musicians’ first visit to avenue Montaigne, we can enjoy not only Mozart but also the return to Paris in lyrical repertoire of Philippe Jordan who spent some years at the Opéra de Paris before taking over as music director of the Vienna Opera.
