About
No work has ever had a more disturbing afterlife, amplified by two centuries of legend. The circumstances in which the Requiem was composed are steeped in romantic mystery. We now know that the work was commissioned by Count Walsegg, a great music lover, who wanted a requiem mass in memory of his deceased wife. Writing, which began in early 1791, was interrupted by the death of the musician, and the score was completed by two of his students, Eybler and then Süssmayer.
