About
The Jerusalem Quartet met while studying at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem more than twenty years ago, in 1993. They trained together in the very unique string quartet discipline with Romanian-born violinist Avi Abramovitch. They were an instant hit in Israel and internationally and were invited to perform on concert stages worldwide. For this evening’s concert they have chosen to play Mozart’s opus 17, the fourth of his quartets dedicated to Haydn, a huge but intimate chamber music masterpiece, steeped in rich subtlety and permeated with the composer’s characteristic emotional volatility. This will be followed by Bartók’s Sixth Quartet, the last significant work composed by the musician before going into exile in the United States. It powerfully conveys the inevitable approach of what would prove to be a final a farewell to his homeland. We will also hear Ravel’s youthful quartet dedicated to his “dear master Gabriel Fauré” which is already so indicative of his strong personality.
