About
The Twilight of the Gods, presented here in a historically-informed version by Kent Nagano and the Dresden Festival Orchestra, is the fourth and final part of the Ring Cycle after The Rhine Gold, The Valkyrie and Siegfried. Wagner drew his inspiration from the events of the 1848 revolution and imagined in counterpoint a “Theatre of the Revolution” describing the overthrow of the established order, which took him twenty years to write. The Ring Cycle is a unique musical and dramatic world in which the musician continuously invents new motifs to inform his plot and characters. The fact that Richard Wagner’s famous epic can still offer entirely new listening experiences today is demonstrated here by the Dresden Music Festival’s ‘Wagner Cycles’ project. Since 2023, in close collaboration with a team of renowned musicologists, each part of the Ring Cycle has been prepared and performed in Dresden and on tours across Europe, using a historically-informed approach. For the finale – the Götterdämmerung or Twilight of the Gods, the only work in the cycle to feature a choir – the Dresden Festival Choir has been specially formed to add an impressive dimension to the sound.
