About
Hippolyte et Aricie was the first opera by Rameau, who was previously known principally for his compositions for harpsichord and theoretical essays. It was premiered to acclaim in 1733, and was performed over 120 times between 1733 and 1767 (albeit with many revisions over the years). He composed thirty works for the opera stage, but it was Hippolyte and the three tragedies which followed it (Castor et Pollux, Dardanus and Zoroastre) which would mark him out as the true successor to Lully.
