About
Looking beyond this accolade, it is important to see this work as the expression of Monteverdi’s own personal dramatic genius as he was the first composer to combine acting, music and feeling. In Florence, which was still shaped by the Renaissance, Monteverdi invented a new form with the full palette of musical resources at his disposal. This produced a dazzling synthesis of sung and declaimed arias, bucolic ensembles and stirring choral passages, not forgetting an orchestra fully committed to supporting the story.
