About

First performed in 1735 at Venice’s most prestigious theatre, La Griselda was Vivaldi’s most successful opera. In this mature work, with a libretto revised by the young and already highly talented Goldoni, Vivaldi scored a hit with mezzo-soprano Anna Giro, the most renowned performer of her day, and conclusively won over the Venetian elite. Some twenty years ago, Jean-Christophe Spinosi resurrected this work with a team that would go on to define the “Vivaldi revival” (including Sonia Prina, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, and Philippe Jaroussky). The generation of singers performing with Julien Chauvin tonight will doubtless bring a fresh sparkle to Vivaldi’s gem.
