About
The Marriage of Figaro sparkles with the timeless genius of Mozart and Da Ponte. The Marriage is about five characters torn between love and desire. The whole work is shaped by this depiction of love and social conventions. There is also a lot of Mozart himself in the work. In the margins, we get glimpses of his own personal experience – his run-ins with his own autocratic employer, Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg, his daring digs at the aristocracy and his emphasis on the intelligence of ordinary folk. As always, and perhaps more than ever in this instance, we hear the virtuosity of Mozart’s vocal score in recitative, arias and ensembles alike. Mozart is both singular and universal in this masterpiece of recitare, the art of vocal stagecraft.
