About
Following in Rossini’s footsteps and preceding Verdi, Donizetti played a decisive role in the evolution of Italian opera in the 19th century. This prolific composer wrote seventy-one operas. Maria Stuarda is the second work in his “English Queens” trilogy, which began with Anna Bolena and concluded with Roberto Devereux. The plot takes place on an island in northern Europe where two queens, Catholic Mary and Anglican Elizabeth, wage a merciless war, not only for power but also for the affections of the same man. In the end, only one will emerge victorious from this lyrical drama, which is expansive and melancholic in equal measure.
