About
Mozart’s precocious genius never ceases to amaze. At an age when most teenagers’ thoughts naturally turn to the dreams and games of youth, he was composing Mitridate, his first opera seria, with a libretto adapted from the eponymous tragedy by Racine. From the outset, the work was both a masterstroke and a major early-career success. Against a backdrop of a war of succession to the throne and inevitable betrayals, Mozart composed a score that is both spirited and deeply moving. In keeping with the conventions of the opera seria form, the work is packed with virtuoso arias for each performer and they only come together in the brief final quintet.
