About
In Britain under King George II, the majestic music of Handel punctuated the political calendar. In 1727, Zadok accompanied the coronation of the sovereign and, in 1749, his Music for the Royal Fireworks celebrated the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. The Messiah was the archetypal English oratorio and its jubilatory “Hallelujah” chorus is one of the great landmarks in British musical heritage. A selection of arias and orchestral pieces echo the ceremonial choruses. Jeanine De Bique’s light voice and sprightly vocal runs are perfectly suited to this inspired virtuoso repertoire. In 1786, the people of Prague gave Mozart’s works a warm welcome. As a token of his gratitude, he presented them with a new composition, Symphony No. 38. By bringing together these celebratory works, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and its musical director Thomas Hengelbrock have conceived the concert as a spectacular display of musical pyrotechnics.
