About

"O Mozart! immortal Mozart! what countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!" Schubert penned these appreciative words in his diary in June 1816. Three months later, he completed the manuscript of his Fifth Symphony, a radiant, vibrant work in which numerous Mozartian references can be discerned. The parallel is therefore striking, and it is fitting that this programme should open with the exhilarating commotion of The Marriage of Figaro. Beethoven serves as a bridge between Mozart and Schubert. Piano Concerto No. 4, composed at the dawn of the 19th century, draws its expressive content from the budding Romantic movement whilst staying true to the classical form with fast-paced melodies and crystal-clear orchestration. Its hallmarks are the freedom and breadth of the composition from beginning to finish. This is immediately evident in the piano’s solo exposition of the main theme at the start of the first movement, before the orchestra even makes its entry. This major work in the piano repertoire is particularly cherished by pianists and will be brought to life by the talent of Javier Perianes.
