About
Schumann’s Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 2 were written a few months apart and paint a portrait of a conductor emboldened by love. Conductor Riccardo Minasi and pianist Vadym Kholodenko bring their close rapport to bear on this programme devoted to the ultimate Romantic. The Piano Concerto can be read as yet another declaration of love for Clara, whom he married in 1840. The figure of his beloved shines through most vividly in the first movement, where she encounters Eusebius, Schumann’s musical, poetic and reserved alter ego. Numerous coded messages permeate Symphony No. 2, written by the composer between two periods of depression, which explains its somewhat sombre character. The work draws on autobiographical elements, whilst the saving figure of Clara haunts the score.
