About
The nickname the «Great» fits Symphony No. 9 like a glove. Radiant and majestic, it displays proportions which are unprecedented in the composer’s work. Some ten years after its composition, in 1838, Schumann noted the “divine expanses” of the score. Today, one wishes it would stretch forever. The same optimism pervades Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, one of Emmanuel Pahud’s favourite pieces. The orchestra’s bite is softened here by the flute’s whimsical runs: Nielsen himself noted the childlike innocence of his solo part. Composer Justé Janulyté opens the concert with her work Confluere, which is conceived as a stream of sound. The piece is dedicated to the conductor Kristiina Poska.
