Strauss Metamorphosen
Beethoven Symphony No. 3 Op. 55 « Eroica »
About
Richard Strauss completed his Metamorphoses in April 1945; he was eighty years old and Germany had just experienced a bruising defeat. It is therefore a late-life and an end of the world work. He had composed numerous works for voice, but this one features just strings. This poignant lament finishes with a reference to the Funeral March from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, « Eroica », as a nod to German culture’s finest hour. For many, it is entirely appropriate that these two pieces, linked by an ineffable atmosphere, should be heard in a single performance.
