About
A momentous evening for the Orchestre National de France with this monumental programme featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and excerpts from the Missa Solemnis, conducted by the orchestra’s new musical director, Philippe Jordan. From the mystery surrounding its origins to its unusual finale, Beethoven’s Ninth is arguably the most iconic work in the symphonic repertoire. This grandiose piece reflects, more than any other, the immensity of its composer’s vision, which is both primal and Dionysian. Alongside three excerpts from the Missa Solemnis, we will hear the rare overture to The Consecration of the House. Written in response to a commission during the turbulent period between the composition of the Missa and the Ninth, it was premiered in 1822 and performed again on 7 May 1824 at the concert where the Missa and the Ninth were themselves premiered.
