About
This is a fiendishly clever programme, pairing Strauss and Korngold. The Vienna Philharmonic and Lorenzo Viotti, a brilliant standard bearer for the younger generation of conductors, showcase their musical heritage. The concert opens with Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier suite, in which the Viennese strings are sure to shine. This is followed by Korngold’s rare Sinfonietta, composed in 1912 at the astonishing age of 15 and premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Felix Weingarten. Some saw the prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold as the most worthy successor to Austro-German composers contemporaneous with Richard Strauss at the start of the 20th century. This early Sinfonietta demonstrates exceptional technical mastery and genuine poetry, bringing impressive chromatic depth to the orchestra. The Vienna Philharmonic therefore invites us this evening to revisit ‘their’ history under the baton of Lorenzo Viotti, who demonstrated his affinity with this repertoire last season in Zurich by conducting the opera Die tote Stadt with lyricism and flair.
