When Nedezhda Zhdanova attempted to make a documentary about Grigory Sokolov in 2016, she was only able to interview his family, colleagues and pupils. The title of the film was “An Interview That Never Took Place”. The fact is, the virtuoso does not grant interviews, pose for photographers, or play ball with the media, and shuns anything that might distract him from his quest for musical perfection. Yet, although he obviously does not communicate on any social media, he has a vast community of followers that describe him as the greatest living pianist. Always turning up without ever knowing what they will hear, his loyal followers are certain of one thing at least: the master’s generosity will extend beyond the official programme. As usual, the evening will draw to a close with a medley of six encores.
