About

2027 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Beethoven. To launch this year of celebration, the great Chinese pianist of his generation, 36-year-old Zhang Haochen, will fire the opening salvo. Audiences who heard his Schubert, and Liszt’s Transcendental Études, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées know that he is a performer to be reckoned with. He is more than qualified to play Beethoven, as is demonstrated by his recent recording of the Hammerklavier Sonata: colossal skills, a transcendent sense of rhythm, indescribable colours, and that rare quality of long phrasing which draws us into the heart of the mystery that is Beethoven. This evening, he is playing the last four Sonatas – a rare feat in a concert performance. A truly special event.
