About
Puccini wrote just ten operas in a career spanning forty years and Manon Lescaut has a special place in this corpus as it was the first major hit which set the seal on his reputation. For this story, which had already been set to music by Auber and Massenet, he went through seven different librettists before achieving a totally satisfactory text. The result is a profoundly lyrical work with a number of unforgettable arias and duets extoling the power of love from frivolity right through to Manon’s exile and death in distant Louisiana.
For this work, which has not been frequently performed in Paris in recent decades, the Théâtre has assembled a dream cast of world-class singers, with vocally and theatrically sumptuous American singer Ailyn Pérez as Manon, and des Grieux sung by Roberto Alagna, whose Latin temperament and vocal quality are splendid in this repertoire. This is his big comeback to the Paris opera stage and he will be performing for the first time on avenue Montaigne in a staged production. In the orchestra pit, the Orchestre National de France will be back under the baton of Lorenzo Passerini. This is also a comeback for Oliver Mears (Semele by Handel), who once again explores the twists and turns of desire in our modern world and relationships between men and women.
