About

This was the first opera written by the composer when he arrived in Great Britain and it is renowned for its vocal difficulty. Rinaldo was probably Handel’s most successful work during his lifetime. It was composed from a libretto telling the story of Rinaldo and the magician Armida, and met with unprecedented acclaim as soon as it was premiered. It was written in just fourteen days. Handel reused arias from previous works, as was often his custom. Thus the ultra-famous aria in Act II “Lascia ch’io pianga” was heavily inspired by the aria “Lascia la spina” which he composed four years earlier for Il Trionfo del tempo.

For this new production, Philippe Jaroussky is back in the orchestra pit on avenue Montaigne for his second Handel after the magnificent Giulio Cesare three years ago. He will be surrounded by a cast of seasoned performers of this repertoire. Argentine director Valentina Carrasco has been switching between different types of repertoire with subtlety and inventiveness since her early career with the La Fura dels Baus collective, shifting from upbeat bel canto repertoire to John Adams. This new production of Rinaldo will be her first foray into baroque territory, but she will undoubtedly tackle this story of the lovestruck magician with relish and flair.
