About
Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian graces the stages of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera (Puccini’s Il Trittico) and the Royal Opera House in London. She is therefore accustomed to performing on major opera stages, but tonight she is in the intimate setting of a recital, accompanied on the piano by Lukas Geniušas, for a masterclass in Rachmaninov’s melodies. A contemporary of Ravel, Bartók and Schoenberg, Rachmaninov remains a melodist of inexhaustible and moving inventiveness. His songs span the period from 1890 to 1916, when he left his homeland. Demanding in terms of literary quality, they feature Pushkin and Lermontov, as well as some of his contemporaries. Although we can detect musical echoes of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, he knows how to adorn them with a whole range of highly personal nuances, resulting in a body of work of great coherence and delicacy.
