About
The origins of the Lied lie in 16th-century German ecclesiastical and popular vocal traditions, before gradually becoming vocal exercises for a single voice which reached maturity in the 19th century with Schumann, Schubert and Brahms. Hugo Wolf embraced the example of his illustrious predecessors. In the late 1880, he wrote 242 Lieder in the space of just 3 years, including 53 pieces for the famous Mörike songs, several of which will be performed tonight. Here, Wolf follows in the footsteps of Schubert and Schumann, just as Mörike did in those of Goethe, with that peerless sense of dramatic tension at its peak of emotional intensity.
