About
The names of Debussy, Chopin and Rachmaninov are not immediately associated with the realm of the cello, yet all three have made contributions to it, often little-known, but which would benefit from being more present in chamber music programmes. Debussy's sonata is a late work that leaves the cello in the spotlight and cleverly combines sarcastic humour and melancholy poetry. Of course Chopin is the composer for the piano par excellence, but he nevertheless left four pieces for the cello which shows his admiration for the instrument. The sonata performed tonight shows great ambition, in its length, complexity and refinement. Rachmaninov's chamber music repertoire is not the most famous and celebrated of the musician's works, and yet it offers great sonic whirlwinds and an elegiac spirit among the most romantic pages of Russian musical literature. His Sonata Op. 19 brilliantly echoes Chopin's, if only in the reprise of the key in G minor.
