The success of The Creation in 1798 pushed Haydn and his librettist Baron Gottfried van Swieten (the same baron who commissioned Mozart to revisit Handel's Messiah) three years later to immediately write another oratorio, which was written with "great difficulty" but was as successful as the previous one. Nature's cycle of seasons symbolically reflects human existence. Thanks to its abundance of picturesque details, the text by the poet James Thomson provided Haydn with the opportunity to use many imitative figures: one can hear lambs jumping, thunder rumbling, bells ringing... There is no doubt that this pictorial "musical melting pot" should find in Emmanuelle Haïm a sound that resonates with its true value.
