About
Mozart wrote the Krönungsmesse at the age of twenty-three, commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg Colloredo, in honour of the feast commemorating the Coronation of the Miraculous Virgin. The Mass was immediately a great success at its inception and was performed again at the Coronations of Leopold II in Prague in 1791, and of Francis II the following year. A composition of vast dimensions for soloists, choir and orchestra, the Mass is the most famous of the twenty composed by Mozart. He used a virtuoso palette, even making the Agnus Dei the original melody of the aria "Dove Sono" by the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. This magnificent work, where choir and soloists alternate, unfolds with the help of brass bands, the brilliance and splendour of a grandiose operatic finale.
