First Prize winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978, the Russian pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev is not only one of the great representatives of the Russian keyboard school but also an “unconventional" performer of the standards on the international scene. During his last recital here fifteen years ago, in 2006, Renaud Machard wrote in Le Monde about the evening in the following terms: "He had to play Chopin. Tonight it will be Mozart and Schumann. Mikhail Pletnev does what he likes and no one can criticize him. His world is characterised by the quirky, which is not an aesthetic, a system, because it seems to be governed by the genius of the moment. Pletnev does the opposite of what others do, but he never seems to think he is more interesting than what he plays." He concluded, "This is why Mikhail Pletnev is considered by his peers to be one of the greatest living pianists. That is why this recital, cruel and beautiful, is one of the loudest we have ever heard". We predict that the magic will once again be present tonight.
